Infection Prevention & Control Policy

Seasonal Influenza & Respiratory Illnesses

Policy Statement

  • All staff must follow infection prevention and control (IPC) practices: vaccination, hand
hygiene, respiratory etiquette, PPE, environmental cleaning.
  • Ignite Families emphasizes staying home when ill and will not penalize staff for following
    illness protocols.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO) is available only after 90 days of employment. Until then, employees
must use unpaid leave if they are unable to work due to illness.
  • Annual flu-season risk assessment will identify vulnerabilities and adjust controls.
  • Supplies (soap, sanitizer, tissues, masks) will be available in all service areas.

Procedures

Vaccination

  • Staff are strongly encouraged to receive an annual flu vaccine by October 31 each year.
  • Note: Vaccination is not required as a condition of employment; staff who decline must
adhere strictly to other IPC practices.
  • Documentation of vaccine or declination submitted to HR.

Respiratory Hygiene & Cough Etiquette

  • Provide tissues, masks at entrances.
  • Teach staff/clients to cough into elbow or tissue.
  • Staff who are actively sick but cleared to work must wear appropriate PPE (e.g., mask) at
all times while in the office or working with clients.

Use of PPE

  • Staff providing direct care to ill individuals must use appropriate PPE (mask, gloves, eye
    protection) as training allows.
  • Proper donning/doffing and disposal required.

Hand Hygiene

  • When: before/after client contact; after contact with respiratory secretions or surfaces; before eating; after restroom; after removing gloves; entering/leaving client spaces.
  • How: wet hands, apply soap, lather all surfaces (palms, backs, between fingers, under
nails), scrub 20 seconds, rinse, dry with clean towel or air dry, use towel to turn off faucet or
    open door if available.
  • Hand sanitizer with ≥ 60% alcohol if handwashing not possible; but wash with soap if
    hands visibly dirty.

Screening & Reporting

  • Staff self-screen daily for flu-like symptoms.
  • Anyone who becomes sick at work or arrives sick must immediately separate themselves,
notify a supervisor, and either wear PPE (mask, gloves if needed) or leave work if symptoms
    are severe.
  • Return to work is allowed only when: Fever-free for at least 24 hours without medication;
    Symptoms are improving overall.

Illness & Return-to-Work Requirements

  • Based on CDC guidance.
  • Symptomatic or positive staff must notify supervisor and remain home until meeting
    return-to-work criteria.
  • For asymptomatic positives, follow CDC timeframes.
  • Upon return, staff should wear a mask indoors for at least 5 days and avoid close contact
    with high-risk individuals.
